Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Bill Detective.

What bills can I upload?

Any Texas electricity bill. PDF, photo, screenshot -- if you can see it, we can read it. Upload bills from any provider to see your actual rate, usage, and contract details.

What EFLs can I upload?

Any Electricity Facts Label from any Texas provider. This is especially useful when your provider sends you a renewal offer -- upload the EFL to see exactly what you'd be paying, then compare it to other plans on Compare Power.

What is an EFL?

An Electricity Facts Label (EFL) is a standardized document required by Texas law that shows a plan's average price at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh usage levels. Every electricity plan must have one -- it's the truth-in-advertising for electricity.

How accurate is Bill Detective?

Very accurate. We extract rates, usage, charges, and contract details with high precision. And when something is unclear or we're not 100% confident? We'll tell you. That's part of our commitment to truth -- you'll always know what we know and what we don't.

What is an ESIID?

Your ESIID (Electric Service Identifier) is the unique 17-22 digit number that identifies your meter in Texas. You need it when switching providers -- and we extract it automatically so you don't have to hunt for it.

Why does my average rate matter?

Your average rate (shown in c/kWh) is the single most important number for comparing electricity plans. It includes all charges -- energy, delivery, fees -- divided by your usage. When shopping for a new plan, compare this number to find real savings.
