Why ComparePower Exists
Since Texas deregulated its electricity market in 2002, consumers have had the power to choose their electricity provider. But with that power came confusion. Hundreds of plans, dozens of providers, and marketing tactics designed to obscure true costs - it's no wonder many Texans end up paying more than they need to.
We founded ComparePower in 2009 with a simple mission: bring transparency to the Texas electricity market. We believed then, as we believe now, that every Texan deserves to know exactly what they'll pay for electricity before they sign up for a plan.
The Problem With Advertised Rates
Electricity companies in Texas are required to show rates at specific usage levels: 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh. These numbers might seem helpful, but they're often misleading. Your home doesn't use exactly these amounts every month - your usage fluctuates based on the season, weather, and your habits.
Many plans are structured with "usage credits" that only kick in when you hit certain thresholds. Use less than that threshold, and you miss the credit. Use more, and you pay premium rates. These plans can look great on paper but cause bill shock in real life.
How Live Link Changes Everything
Live Link is our proprietary solution to this problem. Instead of guessing your usage or relying on industry averages, Live Link securely connects to your utility company and pulls your actual usage history. We then calculate what every available plan would actually cost you based on your real usage patterns.
This means no more surprises. No more apples-to-oranges comparisons. Just clear, honest numbers that show you exactly what you'll pay.
Your Electricity Is The Same Regardless of Provider
Here's an important fact that many Texans don't know: your electric reliability has absolutely nothing to do with which Retail Electric Provider (REP) you choose. The same wires, the same lineworkers, the same service.
Your local utility company (like Oncor, CenterPoint, or AEP) is responsible for delivering electricity to your home and maintaining the power lines. They respond when the power goes out. Your REP simply bills you for the electricity you use. So when you pay more for a "big brand," you're not getting better electricity or more reliable service - you're just paying more.
Switching Is Easy and Painless
One of the biggest myths about switching electricity providers is that it's complicated or risky. In reality, it's completely seamless. When you sign up with a new provider, they handle the entire transition. No home visits, no power outages, you don't even need to call your old provider.
Texas law also protects you. You can switch to a new plan up to 14 days before your current contract ends without paying any early termination fees. This gives you plenty of time to find a better deal before your contract expires and you end up on a more expensive "holdover" rate.
